Review: Jack and the Beanstalk at De Montfort Hall
De Montfort Hall have created another Christmas Cracker for their 2016 Panto. This year’s show, Jack and the Beanstalk, has been created in conjunction with partners Imagine Theatre and written especially for DMH by BAFTA award-winning writing duo Iain Lauchlan and Will Brenton.
Once again, it’s packed full of music, laughter, silliness, a dancing cow and plenty of audience participation – all the hallmarks of a traditional family pantomime! The cast are pretty special this year too with X Factor 2013 winner, and local Leicester favourite, Sam Bailey as the Queen of the Flower Fairies; TV impressionist and Britain’s Got Talent finalist Jon Clegg returns as Simple Simon, along with BBC Radio Leicester presenter Martin Ballard as Dame Trot. Local dance act, and Britain’s Got Talent 2014 finalists, The Addict Initiative, also make a return after their spectacular appearance in Snow White last year.
The show is a great mix of interactive children’s participation along with amazing vocals not only from Sam Bailey (who is truly amazing live) but also from Sinead O’Callaghan (Jack) and Miracle Chance (Princess Tamara).
Jon Clegg (Simple Simon) is just brilliant again this year. He is a natural entertainer and his impressions just keep getting better and of course the panto wouldn’t be complete without Martin Ballard (Dame Trot), a true panto dame. The absolute star of the show, however, for me and my five year old daughter, was Connor McAllister (Fleshcreep). He makes for an amazing panto villain with just the right amount of terror and comedy as well as an amazing singing voice.
The Addict Initiative provided some spooky back up for Fleshcreep, dressed as cockroaches and scuttling up and down the aisles with torches.
De Montfort Hall has again hit the jackpot with this panto performance. Michael Strassen, who directed last year’s very successful Snow White, has excelled this year and Jack and the Beanstalk has everything you could ask for in a panto.
Go and grab tickets now and visit this wonderful family feel good Christmas spectacular.
