Kick off a summer of fun with an action-packed weekend at the Lunt Roman Fort!

Step back in time at one of the UK’s only timber reconstructed Roman Forts, and see what life was like for the Ancient Romans. March down to the Lunt in Baginton this July for an action-packed weekend at the Lunt Roman Festival 2017 on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 July. Visitors can witness thrilling interactive battle drills, experience daily life in a realistic Roman camp, interact with costumed characters, see live displays and demonstrations including horses in the Gyrus, and get creative with a variety of Roman-themed crafts for children. There’s sure to be something for everyone to enjoy!

From 10.00am to 4.00pm costumed interpreters will fill the Fort with epic battle re-enactments and scenes of daily Roman life. There will be plenty to keep little soldiers and history enthusiasts busy with action packed demonstrations and the chance to get involved in interactive battle drills for younger visitors. Special weaving demonstrations and creative make and take activities will offer a change of pace and will be sure to show there was more to the Roman Empire than gladiators, swords and shields! See how our ancient ancestors made use of the natural world by training birds of prey in live falconry demonstrations (Saturday only).

Festival attendees will also discover what life was like in Roman Britain from some of the country’s leading re-enactment organisations which include Textiles Through Time, ARC cavalry and The Roman Military Research Society plus Roman traders will be selling replica items.

Across both days, there will be the unique opportunity to watch amazing horseback and infantry demonstrations in the Lunt’s famous and unique surviving Gyrus – a large wooden circular structure designed for training horses, a feature not found anywhere else in the Roman Empire.

Paul Thompson, Engagement & Development Manager at the Lunt Fort, said,

“This is a unique opportunity for individuals and families to experience a taste of how the Lunt Roman Fort may have operated in years gone by. Across the two days, the site will be filled with costumed characters, horses, and fantastic battle drills from some of the best re-enactment groups in the UK. Refreshments will be available to purchase throughout the day and people are invited to dress up in their own Roman garb! The festival offers people a fun and interactive insight into the early history of Coventry, from the Iron Age to the end of the Roman occupancy and is a great way to spend the day with your family. There’s something for everyone to enjoy and maybe learn something new along the way!”
