If you’re anything like us, you’re dreading the thought of braving the wind and rain to do a bit of Christmas shopping. To make things a little easier, the lovely folk at Highcross Leicester are hosting a number of events to get you in the festive mood.
CHRISTMAS CAROLS AT HIGHCROSS:
Choirs from across Leicester will serenade Christmas shoppers at Highcross next week in the build-up to the annual ‘Sing Christmas’ event.
Highcross will welcome five choirs taking part in the popular BBC Radio Leicester event – this year taking place at St Martin’s House, Leicester – to the centre from Monday, December 5 – 9 between 7pm and 8.30pm. Located on the lower mall, outside the Build-A-Bear store, a different choir will perform Christmas carols each evening.
The week of carols leads up to the annual live event, ‘The BBC Leicester Big Christmas Sing’, which takes place on Monday, December 19 at 7pm.
The Sing Christmas event will include readings from award-winning actor, TV and film star Robert Hardy, fitness expert Rosemary Conley and BBC Radio Leicester’s Ben Jackson – to name but a few. Local residents are invited totune in to BBC Radio Leicester and sing along, and can text in comments and submit photos from their own Sing Christmas events.
Jeff Bonser, organiser of Sing Christmas, said: “The whole region is encouraged to take part in the live and interactive broadcast wherever they are, from community centres and pubs to their own homes. The event is always hugely successful and we’re once again looking forward to a really enjoyable community initiative.”
GIVE AN EXTRA GIFT THIS CHRISTMAS:
To coincide with the launch of its annual Christmas Grotto, Highcross Leicester has launched its very own festive toy appeal and is urging shoppers to donate an extra gift for local life-limited children this Christmas.
Highcross has positioned the Christmas drop box next to the centre’s customer information desk on the upper mall, where shoppers can donate a present of their choice to Rainbows Hospice for Children & Young People.
The drop box – in position from now until December 19 – will be emptied in advance of the big day, with all toys going to the children and young people visiting Rainbows over the festive period.
Gurvinder Rupra, marketing manager at Highcross, said: “Not everyone is fortunate enough to spend Christmas together in the ways we take for granted, so we’re hoping that generous Leicestershire shoppers are able to bring a smile to the faces of those visiting Rainbows this Christmas and make the day more enjoyable for them.
“We’re urging shoppers to donate gifts of all shapes and sizes, but we do ask that they’re new, unused and in their original packaging.”
Lisa Todd, a nurse at Rainbows, said: “Initiatives such as the Christmas drop box are a great way to make a difference to the lives of the children and young people that visit Rainbows.
“Toys play a really important role at Rainbows as they help stimulate children of all ages and needs. We’re really looking forward to presenting the children and young people with the generous gifts from the Leicestershire public.”
