Belgrade Theatre Announce Casting Call for Open Auditions

Fancy a chance to perform on stage at the Belgrade Theatre? With the world stage premiere of Crongton Knights coming to Coventry in February 2020, up-and-coming actors, musicians and beatboxers are now being invited to submit audition videos for a chance to appear in the show.

Following the sell-out success of Noughts and Crosses earlier this year, Crongton Knights is the second production to emerge from a consortium between the Belgrade Theatre, Pilot Theatre, Derby Theatre and many more set up to create new work for young people.

Adapted by Emteaz Hussain from Alex Wheatle’s Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize-winning YA novel, it tells the story of a group of teenagers from a South London estate who set out on a journey to help a friend in need.

The play will be co-directed by Pilot Theatre Artistic Director Esther Richardson and Strictly Arts Artistic Director Corey Campbell. Campbell recently joined the Belgrade Theatre as one of its three Co-Artistic Directors for Coventry’s year as City of Culture in 2021.

Together with its co-producers, the Belgrade Theatre is seeking a group of people to play the teenagers in the show. In order to audition, you will need to be aged 18 or over by January 2020, and available for rehearsals and performances running from January-May 2020.

In addition, the company are particularly looking for people with skills in physical theatre, beatboxing and/or singing and music. You don’t need to have experience in all these areas to audition. However, you should be able to show strengths in at least one of them, as well as demonstrating acting skills.

To apply, you’ll need to visit www.belgrade.co.uk/crongtonknights to download the character breakdown and script sheet. You can then choose your character and create a short video (no more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds long).

The video should include:
  • introducing yourself
  • performing your chosen character’s speech
  • performing an optional piece of singing or beatboxing.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Wednesday 31 July.

It’s worth noting that you can record the video on your smartphone or webcam. If for any reason you have difficulties submitting your video via the online form, please contact [email protected].

Crongton Knights makes its world premiere at the Belgrade Theatre 8-22 February 2020 as part of the B2 Season of Love and Belonging.
