Jaguar continues its astounding rebirth with the launch of the XE sports saloon; the driver’s car that’s set with the task of stealing small saloon sales from the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Streamlined styling and a luxurious interior sit astride an incredibly light recycled aluminium chassis to ensure outstanding dynamics and exceptional fuel consumption; essential in today’s environmentally focused marketplace.

Manufacturing of the aluminium-intensive Jaguar XE occurs at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in an all-new facility. Part of a £1.5bn investment, this flexible, purposebuilt site will create 1,700 UK jobs. Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in aluminium structure engineering enables exceptional fuel consumption and emissions figures: with the new Ingenium diesel engines, achieving 75mpg and 99g/km CO2 the XE is the most efficient Jaguar ever. Power fans are not deprived though thanks to the range topping Powered by the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the acclaimed Jaguar F-TYPE, the XE S is capable of 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds.

All that power is easily controlled thanks to some of the most advanced driver assistance systems available. All Surface Progress Control (ASPC), developed through decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems, can electronically gain traction in seconds and is ideal for use on low-grip surfaces, such as snow-covered roads.

Laser projection technology enables the XE’s optional head-up display to generate sharp, high-contrast colour graphics (such as vehicle speed and navigation) retaining clarity even in direct sunlight whilst a forward facing stereo camera is mounted behind the front windscreen to give a 3D view of the road ahead: this highly accurate data is used for functions including autonomous emergency braking and a lane departure warning system.

As technologically advanced and up to date as the XE is, it is instantly recognisable as a Jaguar with its aluminium skin formed around the fundamental principles of perfect proportions and aerodynamic efficiency.

The strongly-sculpted bonnet creates a taut, muscular appearance whilst the very steeply raked windscreen and rising waistline accentuate the streamlined, coupé-like profile, adding to the sense of movement. Signature ‘J-Blade’ running lights up front are complimented by rear lights inspired by the iconic E type; a horizontal line intersecting a roundel, a feature also present on the F-TYPE sports car.

An impressive drag coefficient of just 0.26Cd makes the XE the most aerodynamic Jaguar yet and has been achieved by features that amplify each improvement made. Innovations include front bumper ducts which channel laminar airflow over the surface of the front wheels to reduce drag combined with lightweight under-floor panels running back to the rear silencer to create an almost perfectly smooth surface, significantly reducing drag aiding both performance and economy.

Expectations raised by the XE’s beautiful exterior styling are exceeded once inside. The spacious cabin cocoons front seat passengers with a deep centre console, creating a cockpit-like feel. The 8-inch touchscreen for the new takes centre stage in the sweeping curves of the instrument panel. On models equipped with automatic transmissions, Jaguar’s unique rotary drive selector rises up from the centre console making the care feel alive.

Contour-hugging front seats, available in a range of premium fabrics and fine grade leathers, are mounted low, creating a sportscar like driving position. The XE proves that sleek, streamlined styling and interior space need not be mutually exclusive. All occupants enjoy generous amounts of head and legroom, and the deeply scalloped seatbacks liberate even more space for passengers seated in the rear of the XE.

On the dashboard Jaguar’s new InControl infotainment system takes centre stage: its innovative 8-inch touchscreen brings fast, intuitive access to all features and functions – and iOS and Android smartphone apps. It also controls the XE’s optional Laser Head- Up Display, a first for Jaguar, which projects high-contrast colour images directly in the driver’s line of sight. The virtual images appear to ‘float’ two metres in front of the driver. Displaying information such as speed, turn-by-turn navigation instructions, traffic signs, and cruise control settings in this way means that the driver’s eyes remain focused where they’re needed most: the road ahead.

All models come well equipped with Satellite Navigation, cruise control, DAB digital radio and multi-function soft grain leather steering wheel whilst the Portfolio model adds premium soft grain Windsor leather with herringbone perforations, Meridian audio system, 10 way electric front seats, Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED signature DRLs and 18” alloy wheels (except on 163PS engines). For those wanting to accentuate the sporting style of their XE the R Sport and S models feature a subtle rear spoiler, chrome treatment for the side power vents. sports suspension and a race-inspired interior respectively. The S model adds such trinkets as enlarged air intakes hint for supercharged V6 engine, side sill extensions and red brake callipers.

Prices for the XE start at £26,995 for the 2.0i Petrol SE Auto with the range topping 3.0i S model costing £44,870 on the road.
