Leicester cancer research charity to hold prestigious event at Luffenham Heath golf course

Hope Against Cancer is excited to announce the return of its prestigious and well-attended golf day in June.

The event will take place at Luffenham Heath which is widely regarded as one of the finest yet most challenging courses in the Midlands, with the aim of raising funds to enable Hope Against Cancer to continue funding vital cancer research and clinical trials.

As well as enjoying the challenges the course holds, Hope Against Cancer is also encouraging both businesses and individuals to become sponsors and donate prizes to the evening’s auction, to be conducted by local BBC commentator, Ian Stringer.

The charity is offering a number of sponsorship deals, which include £100 for a golf hole tee-marker sponsor, £400 to sponsor a team, and the ‘halfway house’ sponsor available at £1,000 which will be serving welcome refreshments to the participants and audience at the midway point of the course. In addition, top-end prizes will be donated by events specialist IMG Events and Hope Against Cancer is looking for pledges of further donations to be added.

Like most charities, Hope Against Cancer is governed by a board of trustees, many of whom will be at the event. One of them, James Greenlees, is the nephew of one of the charity’s founders.

I was asked by my aunt Mrs Allison Wilson to join a small group of people to help setup Hope back in 2002,” James explains. “Her inspiration and dedication to the cause was clear for all to see, and Hope Against Cancer began. Since those humble beginnings, Hope has become a shining example of what teamwork and dedication to a cause is all about. To be able to say that I work with Hope is a great honour, as our fundraising for purely local cancer research projects is making a huge impact on so many Leicestershire and Rutland families.”

Hope Against Cancer Chief Executive, Nigel Rose, spoke about the charity’s gratitude for the tremendous support that the golf day is already receiving.

It’s always incredible to see how willing the Leicester community is to support us,” Nigel says. “We’ve been holding this event for six years and each one has been bigger than the last. As ever, we’re grateful to the team at Luffenham Heath for helping us organise this event and for letting us use their fantastic course. As a charity, fundraising events like our golf day are crucial in helping us raise funds to support world-class, life-saving research in Leicestershire and Rutland and this event will go a long way to making sure this continues.

The charity’s work has seen numerous bench and clinical drug trials supported, as well as setting up Leicester’s first dedicated clinical trials facility at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, which treats hundreds of people affected by cancer each a year with the latest drug trials that they would otherwise not be able to access.

Green fees at Luffenham Heath start from £65 and visiting golfers are welcomed throughout the year. The course gives a traditional feel and is a beautiful setting for Hope’s golf day.
