Award success for Made at Curve production of Sunset Boulevard

Leicester’s Curve theatre has received a prestigious national award for its production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard at this year’s WhatsOnStage Awards.

The WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major UK theatre awards decided entirely by audience members and the ceremony took place Sunday 25 February at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London.

Voted ‘Best Regional Production’ by audience members, Sunset Boulevard opened at Curve 28 Sep 2017 and is currently touring the UK. The Michael Harrison, David Ian and Curve production is directed by Curve’s Artistic Director Nikolai Foster.

Leading actors Ria Jones and Danny Mac, who play Sunset Boulevard’s faded silent-screen goddess Norma Desmond and impoverished writer Joe Gillis, were also nominated for their performances at the awards.

In a joint statement, Curve’s Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said:

“We have immense pride in our Made at Curve production of Sunset Boulevard; to receive this award is a real honour and a testament to the strength of the work we are creating here in Leicester and the incredible teams who come to Leicester and make work with us. Over 100,000 people have seen Sunset Boulevard at Curve and across the UK, with the tour continuing through 2018. What makes this award all the more special is that it’s voted for by the public and we’re immensely grateful to everyone who took the time to vote for our production. We would like to thank the team at Really Useful Group as well as our terrific co-producers Michael Harrison and David Ian.

This year marks Curve’s 10th year and it is brilliant to celebrate it with such success already. It’s shaping up to be a very exciting year!”
