The Phoenix wins Britain in Bloom

How refreshing – the Phoenix cinema in Leicester not only show great independent films, but have just won an East Midlands Britain in Bloom award for its city garden as well as hosting an intimate Q&A session with local sports stars Leicester Riders for their customers. This is a cinema with a difference!

Phoenix partnered with Everards of Leicestershire in 2015, with the two working together to promote independent cinema and beer. Everards has helped Phoenix invest in its city garden, making it a more pleasant place to enjoy a pint and to provide some locally grown herbs and salad for the Phoenix Café Bar. Two years on and Phoenix has just won an East Midlands Britain in Bloom award – the only cinema in the UK to hold such an award!

The award is marked on; environmental impact, community engagement and gardening skills.

Phoenix has been supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who work regular to design and maintain the garden through the year

Patrick Welsh of Phoenix said “We’ve had fantastic support from Everards who have generously given us vital funds to buy plants and the equipment we need to keep the garden going. Everards have helped us create a lovely space for our customers to enjoy in the heart of the city.”

Café bar manager, Richard Smith, has been working with Britain in Bloom for a number of years and working hard to get the garden to a place where they could proudly enter. Judged by locals, all garden entries are assessed and scored accordingly.

A local charity, Phoenix likes to be different and give their customers evenings to remember. They have just hosted an intimate Q&A session with The Leicester Riders, where customers were invited to enjoy hearing stories from the players about the sport, the team and being part of Leicester. The night was hugely successful and hopefully will be repeated in 2018 – look out at the Box Office for new and exciting events from your independent cinema!

Phoenix has Everards Tiger on the bar permanently as well as an Everards Limited Edition Beer that changes each month, so you can try something a bit different at the bar as well as on screen.
