It’s been a busy year for Birmingham Airport and it is set to get even busier, we’ve rounded up the latest news from Birmingham Airport.

 

Primera Air Will Fly Direct to Boston and New York

Primera Air, a new low cost airline, will start transatlantic flights to New York and Boston from Birmingham Airport in May 2018.

New York will depart from Birmingham daily with Boston departing on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

The airline will base its brand new Airbus A321 Neos, configured with 16 premium economy seats and 182 economy seats, at Birmingham Airport. Passengers can also use the Wi-Fi on board and the aircraft has full charging facilities for their devices.

William Pearson, Aviation Director commented: “We are delighted to be entering in to a partnership with an additional transatlantic airline.  Primera Air will offer daily flights to New York and give passengers the chance to visit Massachusetts’ capital and largest city – Boston. This is a brand new route from Birmingham so we are delighted that Primera Air will give people from the region the opportunity to visit this city direct from their local airport.”

Services from Birmingham to US will commence in May 2018 and will be year-round operations. Seats are on sale now with starting fares of £149.00 (one way, all taxes included) and can be booked on www.primeraair.co.uk

Busiest Ever Month Recorded at Birmingham Airport in July

Passenger figures for July have shown that Birmingham Airport saw its busiest month on record. Over 1.4 million people travelled through the terminal – giving a 17.6% growth rate year on year.

In total 1,437,528 passengers flew through Birmingham – over 215,000 more than the same month in 2016.

Short haul traffic saw the most significant rate of growth with an increase of 19.3% year on year whereas long haul services saw a 3.3% increase.

Jo Lloyd, Commercial Director at Birmingham Airport, said: “Every month we are seeing significant passenger growth and July is no exception being in the peak of the school summer holiday season.

“This has given us our twenty ninth consecutive month of record breaking growth and our forth million passenger month this year.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for 89 per cent of the total, with charter passengers making up the remaining eleven per cent.

Birmingham Airport Supports Local Education Initiative

Birmingham Airport has partnered with a social enterprise company called ‘The Wonder Why Society’ to help promote inspired learning and improve educational opportunities for pupils in local primary schools.

Based in Birmingham and part of the Solihull Chamber, the company aims to tackle two social problems – disengaged learning and the skills gap.

The interactive learning platform informs and engages users on issues such as the environment and community and has a Birmingham Airport zone included.

Loyal Passenger Takes 1000 flights with KLM

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines welcomed Birmingham based passenger, David Jones on board his 1000th flight with the Air France KLM group last month.

David Jones, Technical Sales Manager at Dunlop Aircraft Tyres Ltd has been travelling with Air France KLM to destinations across Africa and the Middle East from Birmingham for 36 years. Since boarding his first ever KLM flight in 1981, where he flew from Cairo to Amsterdam on a DC8 aircraft, he has travelled on 836 flights operated by KLM and 162 operated by partner Air France.

Hilton to Land at Birmingham Airport

Hilton has signed a franchise agreement with Castlebridge Hotels Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wylam Investments, to open a 178 bedroom Hilton Garden Inn hotel next to the terminal at Birmingham Airport.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, EMEA, Hilton said: “Often cited as the best place to invest in the UK outside of London, demand in Birmingham is growing fast. Infrastructure projects will only boost that growth and Hilton Garden Inn Birmingham Airport is in a terrific location—we can’t wait for it to open next year.”
