Acclaimed sculptor, Nic Joly, is making a return for 2017 with his latest collection of original wall-mounted structures. Aiming to ‘tackle social restraints that we impose on ourselves’, Being Human celebrates honesty and words that go unspoken.
The collection will be available to view at Castle Fine Art on the ground floor of the Mailbox on Saturday 15th July. The artist will be making an appearance from 1pm – 4pm, when visitors will have the opportunity to talk to him about his inspirations and ideas.
Formerly a theatre set creator and furniture maker, Joly’s hands-on experience has proven invaluable in the creation of the tiny figures which he now uses to represent his observations of life.
The artist’s previous collection, Light And Dark, acted as a satirical spotlight on human nature and presented everyone as having shades of ‘good’ and ‘bad’. Being Human progresses from this and encompasses a fuller emotional range with shades of politics and humorous nuances.
The collection features five boutique editions which each focus on a different theme. They will be launched separately as show exclusives at events all around the UK. As the tour reaches Birmingham, Joly will be unveiling a new piece entitled Words of Wisdom.
Nic Joly said: “’Being Human throws societal ideas under the microscope and gives us hope that our fear of judgement is misplaced. With this collection I wanted to create an open dialogue where shame has no place.
“I want people to be renewed by the warmth and humour that is present in my art. I want them to feel safe in the knowledge that I not only accept their faults and flaws, I celebrate them.”
Danny Wigley, gallery manager for Castle Fine Art, Mailbox – Washington Green Fine Art’s nationwide network of high street galleries – said: ‘’We are extremely excited that Nic has chosen to unveil a never before seen piece in our gallery. He is one of the most innovative artists in today’s contemporary art scene so our guests are in for a treat.
“His highly collectable art tackles the enormity of life’s trials and tribulations on a miniature scale. Each piece is painstakingly created by Nic, who crafts every single figure himself ensuring the composition is perfectly balanced and tells the story he intended.”
Those wishing to attend the event and meet the artist should contact the gallery team to be added to the guest list.
