BIRMINGHAM’S FIRST GREEK TAVERNA OPENS IN THE ARCADIAN CENTRE

If you’re missing out on your Greek holiday this year, don’t despair, the next best thing is opening in the Arcadian next week.

Mythos Taverna, Birmingham’s first authentic Greek Taverna, will be throwing open its terrace doors on Monday 17th May.  Located opposite the Hippodrome Theatre, Mythos is on a bold mission to bring the true flavour and spirit of Greece to Birmingham, serving authentic dishes from across Greece and its beautiful islands.

The site formerly occupied by The Green Room has been transformed into a beautiful rustic Mediterranean style restaurant. The white building now holds a 70 seater restaurant and has a beautiful heated terrace,  bedecked with deep red flowers, facing theatre square.

Greek hospitality is synonymous with big family dining; laughter around the table and a huge variety of ‘mezze’ dishes to pick from.

The ‘mezze’ dishes are the big pull, priced at £4.50 each, you will spoilt for choice: Dolmades (Vine leaves filled with aromatic rice and mince lamb) and spiced Falafel, Spanokopita (Spinach and feta stuffed filo pastry parcels), Kolokythokeftedes (courgette fritters with a melted feta centre) and Soutzoukaia (Aromatic beef meatballs from Smyrna with a rich tomato sauce).

For the traditional Greek grill, all the cuts of meat are specially prepared for Greek dishes using cuts such as the neck. Everything is cooked over their traditional Greek charcoal to give that taste of authenticity, such as the marinated Souvlaki (meat on small skewers) and the Sovla, (which is a rare find in the Midlands), a whole leg spit roast usually made for Greek celebrations.

The mains are a feast of popular dishes fit for a Greek God! You can savour the tastes of the Brizola (Charcoal Cypriot style extra large pork chop, served with oregano fries and salad), Sheftalia (Cypriot minced pork and lamb sausages), Lamb Cutlets marinated in oregano and olive oil, charcoal grilled served with aromatic rice or the Grilled Sea Bream. Of course any Greek restaurant worth their salt will have Kleftiko as their signature dish and the much loved mousaka!

The Mixed Grill Special (£13.50) is bound to be very popular too, a Charcoal grilled platter of Chicken and Pork souvlaki with loukaniko sausage, oregano fries, side salad and pitta. The Loukaniko sausage is made with wild boar cooked in a tasty sauce of red wine, herbs and spices.

Head Chef Sylvia Grigore has had 12 years training in Athens followed by 5 years at London’s oldest Greek restaurant. Everything is made from scratch on site, such as the hummus dips, taramosalata, tzatziki and Melitzanosalata and the famous Greek feta salad.

Greece is famous for its syrup soaked traditional desserts with essences of cinnamon and rose water that take your tastebuds on a trip through the eastern mediterranean.

Whilst Greek wine has been keeping a low profile amongst UK drinkers, the team at Mythos are really championing Greek wine and have strived to source the very best wine for its restaurant. The Malagouzia, a white wine from the central region is a must.

Malagouzia is an aromatic white variety grown primarily in Central Greece and Greek Macedonia. The variety was rescued from near extinction in 1983 by the winemaker Evangelos Gerovassiliou, after he planted out his vineyard at Epanomi, on the Halkidiki peninsula, with the variety.

General Manager Gabriel Grigore, her husband, who runs the 105 seater restaurant says: “We are very excited to finally come out of lockdown and offer the public something new and exciting. I assure you won’t have seen quality and hospitality like this. The terrace is in a real sun trap and is a great focal point that seats 30 people.
When restrictions are fully lifted in June we can’t wait to have live music and dancing. Stini Geia Sas! Cheers to all!’

With Greek, Turkish and Persian food seeing a resurgence on the Birmingham scene, Mythos prides itself on creating a truly Greek experience and the best of Greek hospitality. Head down to the Arcadian and see for yourself!
