Birmingham’s cult streetfood favourite, Indian Café Racer, has announced the launch of a new and bigger site in the city, says Jess Leone.

The restaurant that started during lockdown at the back of The Wellington pub, has outgrown its original space and is now relocated to a 65-cover restaurant at 88-90 Bristol Street in Birmingham.
Don’t fear, the relocation has promised to keep the same bold flavours and charming atmosphere that made the original a hit, while offering more space for loyal regulars and first-time diners.

Founder Azad Kayes’ vision for the restaurant was to showcase the energy of India’s streets through food, in a relaxed, modern setting. While the vibe remains laid-back, the food continues to push boundaries, which will be done through their new menu items, including:
- Truffle Paneer Tikka – Creamy tandoor-charred paneer with truffle
- Juicy Lamb Ribs – Robata-grilled, fall-off-the-bone lamb
- Farzi Steak – A meat-free marvel made with aubergine and portobello.
- Mango Fish Curry – South Indian flavours with a zing of raw mango
- Kolkata-style Kosha Murghi – On-the-bone chicken steeped in tradition.
Fan favourites like Gobi Manchurian, Chicken 65, Lamb Biryani and Rajasthani Lamb are still front and centre.

Azad Kayes grew up in a family of restauranteurs. Inspired by a research trip to India and fuelled by a no-rules approach to a running restaurant, he launched Indian Café Racer during lockdown and within months it has built a cult following and an army of regulars.
“We never imagined it would grow this fast,” says founder Azad Kayes. “When we started at the back of a pub during lockdown, it was about getting our food into people’s hands, nothing more. But the support we’ve had from the community has been unreal and this new space is for everyone who has supported us. Our restaurant at The Wellington will remain open, and we’ll be keeping the name Indian Café Racer which fuses the vintage “café racer” motorcycle scene of 1960s Britain and India’s vibrant café culture.”
