Both categories of the Q Guild of Butchers National BBQ Award have been won by West Midlands Butchers. Sutton Coldfield’s Chase Farm Shop has been made a national champion at the 2017 Q Guild of Butchers annual BBQ Award for their outstanding traditional pork sausages. In addition, the Speciality Sausage category was awarded to national champions Wolverhampton butcher Allan Bennett Ltd for their outstanding Sunshine Sausages.
The competition, which took place at Eastwood Hall in Nottinghamshire, saw the butchers walk away with both sausage category: the pork sausage category and speciality sausage category . They beat a host of other butchers from across the country to take the prize at the awards dinner at the hotel last Sunday.
The judges, which included David Hughes from UK BBQ Magazine, said of Chase Farm Shop’s winning pork sausage:
“It has a wonderful depth of flavour which really gave it that winning edge over the other entrants.”
Winning butcher Nick McAndrew was delighted by the win:
“We are thrilled that the sausage we make every day has been given this award and is the national champion.”
The judges comments on Allan Bennett’s speciality sausages, The Sunshine Sausage included:
“The Sunshine Sausage was a clear winner in its category for its exceptional combination of flavours, complementing the meat perfectly and texture. It cooked well and looked good too. ”
Winning butcher, Allan Bennett, was delighted with the award:
“We love to play around with unique and interesting flavour combinations which we think will appeal to our customers and we are thrilled that the judges liked our Sunshine Sausage as much as we do! The sausage has been specially developed for the BBQ as it’s guaranteed to bring a little bit of sunshine whatever the weather!”
The BBQ Awards are held annually and are open to any of the 100 plus members of the Q Guild of Butchers throughout the UK. The seven regional heats, which took place in March, April and early May covering Scotland, Wales, South, North East, North West, East and Midlands, each delivered one winner for the national finals. The six BBQ product categories were steak (prepared using only salt and pepper, traditional sausage, burger, speciality sausage, speciality burger and speciality BBQ product.
