We Check Out The New Dim Sum & A La Carte Menu At Wing Wah Birmingam.

Wing Wah Chinese Restaurant has recently relocated to Birmingham City Centre’s China town. Having first opened its door in 1997, Wing Wah has served the city with outstanding Chinese cuisine for years, offers high quality traditional favourites and unusual oriental delicacies at exceptional prices.

Situated on Wrottesley Street, underneath their sister restaurant Ming Moon, Wing Wah recently hosted their first bloggers and influencers captains table event and we were invited along to sample their favourite Dim Sun and A La Carte dishes.

As you enter the restaurant, you can’t help but be struck by the décor. On your right a beautiful golden globe filled wall guides you up towards the main restaurant. An open kitchen runs along the whole right side of the restaurant and there are plenty of tables and booths, perfect for both large groups and smaller parties too.

As we arrived, there was a table filled with elaborately carved fruit and vegetables that looked stunning. Wing Wah is the official Chinese caterer for Birmingham Council whenever delegates and officials visit and they employ someone who’s sole focus is food carving, it is mesmerising to watch them at work. They are not only for decoration either, as a melon rose is often enjoyed as part of a meal, simply extracting a bud with a spoon to enjoy.

Opposite, lay a table covered in the owner’s favourite dishes, Dorian Chang speaks with such excitement as she goes through each dish with you. Explaining how the coloured Dim Sum is coloured naturally using specific extracts or how the giant mushroom is not how it seems. The passion from both Dorian and her husband (head chef) Bong lam, is evident in every single dish presented to us.

Moving downstairs, there are 10 private dining rooms that each have full karaoke set ups too. Each room has a different theme and again can cater for small or large groups and include waiter service and there is a fully stocked bar close by too. We were taken to one of the large private rooms for a captain’s table dinner.

The service throughout the evening was fantastic and the food didn’t stop coming. Every dish was as good as it looked and didn’t disappoint. Favourites were the Beef Short Ribs in Black Pepper Sauce, Crystal Scallop Dumplings, Molten Salted Egg Custard Buns, Minced Pork Shanghai Dumplings Trio, Fresh crème Egg Tart, Tofu Roll in Oyster Sauce, Fried Turnip Paste, Chicken Claw Thai Style and the Crispy Seabass. Each dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavour.

The night was faultless, brilliant food washed down with a lovely red wine from their extensive wine list in the presence of such gracious and attentive hosts.

A huge thank you to Paul Fulford and Dorian Chang for having us a guest. All food and drink were complimentary, and the review, images and opinions are my own.
