Celebrating International Yoga Day 2025: One Earth, One Health

By Sarah Highfield, Founder of Yogagise Yoga and Travel & Wellness Journalist

As the sun rises on 21 June 2025, millions across the globe will unroll their mats and come together in celebration of International Yoga Day. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” is both a powerful reminder and a timely call to action; one that beautifully reflects the deep interconnection between our personal wellbeing and the health of the planet we call home.

Yoga: A Bridge Between Inner and Outer Harmony

I have always believed that the practice of yoga extends far beyond the mat. Yoga is not only a path to physical strength, flexibility, and peace of mind, but also a philosophy that encourages compassion, mindfulness, and unity.

The 2025 theme highlights something I often say in class: we are not separate from nature; we are nature. Just as we care for our bodies through movement, breath, and awareness, we must extend that same care to the earth. Whether it’s through conscious living, mindful eating, or simply walking instead of driving, small shifts in our lives can create a ripple effect of healing for the planet.

Tips for Beginners: Starting Your Yoga Journey

If you’re new to yoga, International Yoga Day is the perfect opportunity to begin. Yoga is inclusive, adaptable, and welcomes every body – regardless of age, size, background, or ability. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Start small.
You don’t need an hour-long session or advanced poses to benefit from yoga. Just 10–15 minutes of mindful movement and breathwork each day can work wonders.

2. Focus on how it feels, not how it looks.
Yoga is about tuning in, not performing. Listen to your body. Let go of comparison, and notice how you feel before, during, and after your practice.

3. Breathe consciously.
Your breath is your anchor. Slow, deep breathing helps calm the nervous system, enhances focus, and connects your body and mind.

4. Be consistent.
Like any habit, the benefits of yoga grow over time. Even a short daily practice can help build strength, reduce stress, and improve sleep and digestion.

5. Find your style.
There are many styles of yoga, from dynamic Vinyasa to gentle Yin. Explore different classes until you find what resonates with you.

Celebrate With Purpose

This International Yoga Day, I encourage you to take a few mindful breaths, step onto your mat, and move with intention; not just for yourself, but for the wider world. Let your practice be an expression of love and gratitude for the earth, a commitment to holistic health, and a celebration of life.  Together, through the spirit of yoga, we can support One Earth, One Health.
