We’re all individuals and nowhere is that clearer than when it comes to planning our financial futures. Goals, hopes and aspirations alter from person to person so it’s important to get advice outside of the traditional ‘one size fits all’ style of financial management and getting to know your financial adviser an their backgrounds is the first step in achieving this.
This issue we find out more about how financial adviser Janine Edwards got started in the industry.
At 21, Janine Edwards was one of Lloyds TSB’s youngest managers, running a branch in Market Deeping, Peterborough. Now Janine has just completed a milestone 30 years in financial services – but life today is very different from the career she first embarked on. Janine has spent the last seventeen years with St. James’s Place Wealth Management, one of the country’s leading wealth management businesses. The firm’s advisers are called Partners, because of the way they work in partnership with their clients, and she is one of only a few females to reach principal status in a company which has more than 3000 Partners and advisers working throughout the UK.
“I had a good grounding in banking, but I always preferred seeing clients face to face and joined St. James’s Place because I saw it as an opportunity to give clients much better advice, offer a distinctive investment management approach and a more holistic wealth management service,” said Janine, now 47. “When St. James’s Place approached me, I knew their reputation was formidable and that they were something special and different.”
Her move to St. James’s Place brought an unexpected bonus – an introduction to charitable fundraising which has now become a passion. “I became closely involved in the St. James’s Place Foundation, which aims to improve the quality of life for those children and young adults in need as a result of disability or disadvantage” said Janine. “I was a member of the Foundation’s committee for nearly four years, looking at worthy causes to which grants can be donated, and still support the Foundation whenever I can.
“The Foundation is an amazing and humbling set-up which is in many ways at the very heart of our culture as a business. It funds hundreds of projects each year and to ensure its needs can be supported, it relies heavily on the generosity and actions of Partners and staff to raise vital funds.
“Over 80% of our Partners and staff make regular contributionsto the Foundation via a monthly covenant, and last year a record £7.6m was raised. Since its inception 25 years ago, more than £50million has been raised and distributed to more than 760 charities.”
Janine is also a Trustee for the ‘Star Trust’ Charity and regularly fundraises for ‘Rainbows’ Children’s Hospice and in 2016 held an evening of fundraising for the Star Trust and managed to raise over £50,000 for the Star Trust and for Alex’s Wish.
Most of Janine’s clients are local people throughout Leicestershire and Warwickshire. “I’ve built up my business over the last seventeen years purely from introductions, recommendations and referrals,” she said. “Relationships are vital. I enjoy having a select group of clients, as this means I can spend more time with them, and look in a more in-depth way at individual financial issues. With an ever-changing outlook, and multiple changes in legislation, people today want more face to face contact, more advice and more detail – and rightly so.”
“Trusting anyone with your family’s personal financial affairs and therefore future, is a huge responsibility. Janine Edwards embraces this duty with great enthusiasm, expert knowledge and professional support that ensures you have complete belief that your children’s future is secure.
Janine not only handles the arduous task of ensuring this, but does so in a manner that means you actually look forward to the next meeting.” Dominic Gomersall, Company Director, Leicester “Janine has become a very important person in our lives. When
we both retired at the age of 50, we had some very important investment decisions to make. Janine rapidly established a high level of trust coupled with a high level of financial competence which enabled us to make the right investment choices, leaving us in a strong position today! She is always there when we need her to answer the myriad of questions which inevitably arise!” Mr P & Dr K Carr
