A DLUXE Journey on the Great Central Railway’s Santa Express

The festive season came alive for our family on the Santa Express with the Great Central Railway. From the moment we stepped onto the platform at Leicester North, the magic was palpable. Mrs. Claus, standing by a grand Christmas tree, greeted us with a smile that instantly put us in the Christmas spirit.

The steam train was waiting for us, its towering presence and gentle puffs of smoke setting the scene for an unforgettable journey. Before boarding, we took a leisurely walk along the platform, admiring the vintage train and soaking in the festive atmosphere. If you arrive early, the small refreshment room is a lovely place to warm up with a hot drink before your journey begins.

Once aboard the Santa Express, we found our compartment, which had a wonderfully nostalgic feel. The period carriage added a touch of old-world charm, and the seats were surprisingly comfortable—perfect for settling in as we prepared for the adventure ahead. As the whistle blew, we were off, and the journey quickly became a mix of festive fun and serene winter views.

Throughout the ride, the train staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring everyone had everything they needed. Our son was kept entertained with a fruit shoot and an activity book, while we enjoyed a warming cream liqueur and a traditional mince pie, both handed out by the staff. The scenery as we passed by Swithland Viaduct was particularly beautiful, with swans gliding across the water in the distance.

At Loughborough Central, we disembarked for a brief stretch of the legs while the train prepped for its return leg. The hot chocolate served on the way back was a nice touch, especially as the temperature started to dip. Then, just as we were settling in, the sound of jingling bells filled the air—Santa had arrived. With a wave of his hand, he and his helpers appeared in our compartment, much to our son’s delight. Watching his face light up as Santa handed out gifts was truly special.

As we pulled into Leicester North, the experience wrapped up with the staff offering goody bags for the children, sending us on our way with a final wave. Despite the drizzle preventing much of a photo op with Santa on the platform, the overall experience felt warm and magical. Our son’s excitement, especially when he opened the beautifully wrapped LEGO gift Santa gave him (a little early, of course), made it all the more memorable.

The Santa Express is one of those rare Christmas experiences that manages to blend nostalgia with new memories. It’s a journey that families will treasure, and for those of us with young children or grandchildren, it’s a perfect way to share in the magic of the season. Five stars—our family was thoroughly charmed, and our eight-year-old couldn’t have been happier.
