Book Clubs, Business Grants, VE Day & Joan Collins’ Shoes – FU Loves Leicestershire #10

I don’t know about you, but we’re really buying into this idea of the ‘new normal’. This is the 50th day – yes we’ve been striking them off on the calendar like we’re inmates – since enforced lockdown and we’re starting to hate it less. Sure, we miss the human physical connections, but we’ve hit a routine with work Zoom calls; and we’re even doing group chats every Saturday night over cam with cocktails; the Sunday morning hangovers are still here just like in the olden days. The rest of the time is spent pottering and wasting time, just like before. So, it all adds up to the thought of unlocking lockdown being both tantalising and terrifying.

We realise it’s not been so easy for everyone, but we did a poll over the weekend to ask friends and family what thing they’d learned about themselves over lockdown that they were unwilling to forego when we were released. The vast majority spoke of finding time for themselves, of operating at a slower pace and finding peace which is no bad thing.

We’re also loving keeping conversations going, whether that’s on here with our newsletter, for our clients and for companies that are new to us and who are wanting to make sure that they can play a part in the conversation and need a helping hand to make them shout a little louder.

As we keep saying, Silence is not golden, we’ve all got to keep talking! Once again, if you’ve got a story that you’d like to share, or if you just want a chat, get in touch by email: [email protected] or [email protected] or call us on 07713 740 272

Take care

WARNING!  DATE SENSITIVE OPTIONS FOR EVERY EMPLOYER RE ANNUAL LEAVE AND REDUNDANCIES DURING FURLOUGH

Last week, the government provided much wanted clarity with regards to annual leave and redundancies with regards to furloughed employees. But why is this update more important than all other times that clarity has been provided by the government?  Why should this grab your attention? Well, this time, commercially sensitive employers, those with cash flow issues, those that might be facing workforce planning issues when they return post lockdown have a real opportunity to head off some prominent issues, whilst subsidised by the government scheme – but you will have to act fast to make this work for your business, given that the scheme is due to expire on 30th June 2020”, warns Toni Robinson, Managing Director of NucleusHR.

WALK TO CAMEROON WITH TWYCROSS ZOO!

Midlands conservation charity, Twycross Zoo, is appealing to the community to join in its biggest fundraising initiative to date: a sponsored Trek to Africa that will take place in May, literally from the comfort of your own home.

The Twycross Zoo team is encouraging people to walk the distance between Twycross Zoo and Cameroon – a collective 3,200 miles to be exact. Twycross Zoo’s CEO, Dr Sharon Redrobe OBE, explained further: “We are not asking anybody to break the Government lockdown rules, but as more people are out walking, as part of their hourly daily exercise, we are hoping the community will commit to walking a number of miles, so we can collectively walk 3,200 miles and raise some much needed funds to support Twycross Zoo during this uncertain time.

It costs, apparently, over £650,000 per month to keep and care for the 500 animals at Twycross – many of whom are endangered. To get involved, you just need to message the Twycross Zoo Facebook page to register your interest”.

“We want everyone to get involved and we don’t mind how people clock up the miles: whether it’s with some laps outside your home or in your garden; on a treadmill, or a couple of miles a day exploring the area where you live during your hourly exercise.

To get involved visit message the Twycross Zoo Facebook page with your interest: here.

There is also a Total Giving page, where everyone can help to collect sponsorship, here.

GOVERNMENT BOUNCE BACK LOANS LAUNCHED

Thousands of small firms and sole traders – including High Street staples like hairdressers, coffee shops and florists – will be eligible for 100% government-backed Bounce Back Loans to help them make it through the coronavirus outbreak, it’s been announced.

Small business owners can apply to accredited lenders by filling out a simple online form, with only seven questions. The government has also agreed with lenders that an affordable flat rate of 2.5% interest will be charged on these loans. And any business that has already taken out a Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan of £50,000 or less can apply to have these switched over to this generous new scheme.

The Bounce Back Loan scheme is the latest step in a package of support measures launched by Chancellor Rishi Sunak – with £7.5 billion already awarded in business grants, 4 million jobs supported through the job retention scheme and tax deferrals supporting hundreds of thousands of firms. MIDLANDS’ THEATRES TALK ABOUT WHEN AND HOW TO REOPEN

Industry paper, The Stage, has reported that some theatres and producers are preparing to stay shut until 2021 amidst fears that they will suffer huge financial losses if government support does not remain in place until they are allowed to fully reopen. Theatres, including Leicester’s Curve and the Birmingham Hippodrome, have shared their plans for different scenarios relating to when theatres are allowed to reopen. Curve’s CEO, Chris Stafford, said he was also looking at a number of scenarios ranging from a summer 2020 opening through to shows not opening until 2021. “We very much hope we will be back in business this autumn at the latest – the scenario of losing Christmas trading is incredibly bleak for an organisation like Curve,” he said, adding: “The challenge, of course, is no one knows when we will be back in business and what restrictions might need to be put in place for audiences to feel safe and secure in coming back to the theatre.” He said Curve was spending thousands of pounds every month on its building and added; “The job-retention scheme has been a lifeline, but if it ceases to exist beyond (end) June, there is only so long our reserves can keep us going while we are closed.”
