Highcross Leicester is set to transform into a space of connection, creativity and calm this May, as it hosts a curated programme of events in celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week.

Running from Wednesday 13 to Sunday 17 May, shoppers are invited to pause, reset and engage in a series of free and accessible experiences designed to support wellbeing in simple but meaningful ways; from movement and music to creativity and conversation.
With all events taking place in the unit next to Boots on the upper mall, the programme includes 30 minute pilates taster sessions led by local fitness instructors I Bear Fitness. An afternoon session will run between 1:00pm and 1:30pm, and an evening session will be run between 6:00pm and 6:30pm on Wednesday 13 May.
On the same day, an African drumming workshop delivered by Ade Anifowose, will be taking place between 3:00pm and 4:00pm. Promising to be a high-energy session, rhythm and sound will be used to boost mood and reduce stress in this interactive experience.
On Friday 15 May, Highcross visitors can take part in collage-making sessions and a canvas painting workshop led by third year Leicester University student and artist, Jesselle. From 1:00pm to 2:00pm visitors will be invited to cut, stick and layer art materials in the free-flowing collage session before creative canvas painting begins between 6:00pm and 7:00pm.
Over the weekend, shoppers will be able to enjoy an immersive sound bowl session with facilitator Marcus Joseph. Taking place on Saturday 16 May from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, the unique drop-in experience will offer visitors the chance to step inside a human-sized crystal sound bowl and experience fully immersive sound healing, encouraging participants to reset and reflect. Visitors should register for interest and are invited to join at any point during the scheduled session.
Rounding off the Mental Health Awareness Week activities, a beginners boxing taster session, delivered by local amateur club and charity, Atlas Boxing, will be taking place between 12pm and 2pm on Sunday 16 May. Drop ins are welcome but registration is encouraged.
Alongside the programme of activities, Highcross will also welcome a number of local charities into the centre throughout the week, including Healthwatch, Jamila’s Legacy, Quetzal and Turning Point. These organisations will be on hand to share information, raise awareness and talk about the support available to the local community around mental health and wellbeing.
Speaking about the programme, centre director at Highcross Leicester, Michelle Menezes, said:
“Mental Health Awareness Week is an important moment to reflect on how we look after ourselves and each other. This series of workshops brings together a range of free and accessible activities that people can drop in and out of throughout the week, whether they’re looking to try something new, take time out for themselves or connect with local organisations.
“Highcross is much more than a place to shop; it’s a community hub and we’re proud to host free initiatives that support wellbeing in practical, welcoming and inclusive ways.”
All activities are open to all ages. Further details and all registration links can be found on the Highcross website, and visitors are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment. All activities will be fully facilitated and no prior experience is required.
