Leicestershire and Rutland’s very own cancer charity, Hope Against Cancer, have succeeded in achieving another amazing funding result.
Not satisfied with having already raised £1.5 million to double the capacity of their clinical trials facility at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Hope have now been able to provide an extra £40,000 to continue to support the work of the Hope Nurse at the totally refurbished centre.
They will also now be providing £15,000 per year for 3 years to part-fund a Hope PhD Studentship at the University of Leicester’s College of Life Sciences. This new position will be two-thirds funded by the University themselves.
Hope Against Cancer’s Chief Executive Nigel Rose told us:“As you can imagine, we are absolutely delighted at being able to provide the extra funding for these two projects. In reaching our goal of improving outcomes and helping cancer patients live longer, we know that we must have a multi-faceted approach.
Refurbishing and doubling the size of the Trials Centre was key for us, but we know that the success of the centre is aided so much by the care given by the Hope Nurses, and we wanted to ensure that their fabulous work could continue. We also understand that investment in future research will play a huge part in the development of innovative treatments, so the PhD Studentship is a wonderful addition to our armoury.”
The new funding, together with the recent expansion of the trials facility, takes Hope closer to their ultimate goal of having Leicester recognised as the centre of excellence for Cancer treatment. It means that ‘early phase’ Cancer trials can go from strength to strength, including new-generation ‘bio-specific’ treatments not currently available within the NHS which target cancer whilst leaving other cells in the body with little or no damage.
Hope Against Cancer have some very ambitious goals for the future but, based on the staggering amount of funds they have raised in what has been a difficult time for many charities, the Hope Heroes will continue to challenge current treatments, outcomes and possibilities for thousands of Cancer patients across the UK from this state-of-the-art facility in Leicester.
