The UK’s first Festival of Sanctuary will be performed in different locations across Leicester city centre between 12-14 August. This is part of the wider Journeys Festival International which is heading to the city that weekend. Working alongside outdoor arts specialists, Southpaw Dance Company, professional actors and dancers will present a large-scale performance, Rush. A cast of up to 200 people, making it one of the most powerful outdoor shows on Saturday 13 August.
Rush will take over the Lee Circle area of the city as part of the festival. Rush is a national performance that has been performed in Blackpool, Hull and South Tyneside. The performance is free so you can bring your friends and family to enjoy this spectacular production.
Over at Leicester’s Central Library will be an exhibition entitled ‘Sanctuary Stories’. This is a part of the free festival weekend. The exhibition centres around people who have recently migrated to Leicester. Collaborating alongside the Roots Group and local artists Mandeep Dhadialla and Ruth Singer, they have created storybooks made from printmaking, collage and textiles. The storybooks aim to inspire conversations around the stories of individuals from scantuary-seeking backgrounds and their connection to community, home and environment. ‘Sanctuary Stories’ will be on display at the library throughout the weekend.
