Young people across the city and county are joining LOROS Hospice in presenting their 2021 flagship fundraising event, Rocket Round Leicester. LOROS have partnered with leading producer of public art events Wild in Art to bring an unforgettable trail of across the city this summer and raise all important funds for the charity. Trail-goers will be able to discover a stellar fleet of stellar Rocket sculptures across the Leicester’s streets and open spaces from 19th July – 26th September.
The main trail showcases 40 giant Rocket sculptures, designed by local and national artists and sponsored by Leicestershire businesses. Over 35 local schools and community groups are joining the fun as part of the Rocket Round Leicester Learning Programme where they have the unique opportunity to decorate their own miniature sculpture, the Junior Jet. Standing at over a meter in height, these sculptures designed by young people will form their own smaller trail across Leicester’s cultural hubs as part of the event a week earlier from Monday 12th July.
The blank canvas of the Junior Jets have provided an exceptional opportunity for classes to engage collaboratively in important topics, from environmental concerns to health and wellbeing. Alongside creating their sculptures for the trail, schools and community groups have also been fundraising to raise crucial funds for LOROS.
St John’s Primary in Clarendon Park have raised over £300 for LOROS by celebrating a Friday afternoon of sculpture decorating with rocket shaped iced lollies. Their Junior Jet has been inspired by a messaging of spreading love to the universe, with each class submitting their ideas to create the final design.
Students from Rushey Mead Academy are reaching new heights as they prepare for a sponsored 100km run to raise funds for the much-loved local charity.
Shooting for the stars, Uplands Infants School have held a space themed week by making their own origami rockets, reading space books, taking part in a fancy dress day and even hosting a cake sale in aid of LOROS.
Snarestone Primary in Swadlincote also hosted an out of this world Rocket themed week where they unveiled their Junior Jet to the class and engaged in science and technology projects, including the children making and launching water-fuelled rockets.
Each school has pledged to fundraise for LOROS to enable them to continue to care for over 2500 terminally ill people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland each year.
