Archway Health Hub Launches Pilates Classes for MS Sufferers

Archway Health Hub in Market Harborough is launching specialised Pilates classes for people suffering from MS. The classes are also suitable for those with Parkinson’s disease or people who have had a stroke.

The sessions are run by Archway’s Head of Pilates Nikki Dyson, who is one of only a few neuro Pilates specialists in the East Midlands. Nikki has previously offered one to one support but is now starting up small group classes as a way of meeting demand.

A recent free taster class held in December was well attended. The taster was designed to show people how they could benefit from practising Pilates and to answer any questions or allay any concerns that people might have.

“Pilates can be hugely beneficial for people with a range of conditions, including MS and Parkinson’s,” explains Nikki. “Whilst Pilates is generally good for core strength, flexibility and posture, it can also be particularly helpful for those with neurological conditions. It can help improve posture, mobility, muscle tone and flexibility as well as boosting the immune system and promoting a more efficient lymphatic and respiratory system.

A fully qualified Body Control Pilates instructor, Nikki worked at a hospital in York prior to coming to Archway in 2015.

“Teaching this form of Pilates is hugely rewarding and can make such a fantastic difference to people’s quality of life, building confidence and independence which is such an important part of managing a neurological condition,” adds Nikki.

Classes take place in Archway’s purpose built studio and can accommodate a maximum of eight people to ensure that everyone receives expert support and attention. Classes run in blocks of six and take place twice a month, commencing on Thursday 12th January 2017. Carers are also welcome at the sessions.

“The response to our free taster session was very positive,” comments Alec Welton who owns Archway Health Hub with his wife and fellow practitioner Stella. “There are few places across the UK that offer this sort of specialised service so we are delighted to be leading the way in the East Midlands.”

Archway also offer a range of Pilates classes from beginners to advanced level to ensure that participants are working at the right level. Classes usually run in 5-8 week blocks aligned to school half terms. The next set of classes is scheduled to start in early January.
