The aptly named beer ‘Tubby’ was a sell-out for Everards the first time round and this May we are delighted to see it return to the bar in support of COPS (Care of Police Survivors), a local charity that supports the families of police officers that have died in service.
What started out as a tribute to an iconic Leicester icon and a way to tell the story of ‘Tubby’ Stephens has blossomed into a wonderful partnership between Leicestershire Police and Everards. Enabling them to support local charity COPS through sales of the beer.
To increase awareness, this year brings the introduction of the new Tubby pin badges, sporting the beautiful pump clip illustrated by a local designer that will be available in Many Everards pubs, local Police Stations and local businesses for a minimum donation of £1 to COPS this May.
Tubby is a dark ale with a rounded character and 5p from every pint sold will be donated to COPS . You’ll find inviting layers of blackberry and vanilla – a beer Everards are confident Tubby himself would have enjoyed!
Leicester PC 83, John William “Tubby” Stephens knew everyone, and everyone knew him. He served for 22 years with Leicester Borough Police Force and he is believed to the inspiration behind the song ‘The Laughing Policeman’ because he was witty, jovial and good humoured.
Leicestershire Police Chief Constable Simon Cole said, “Tubby was an iconic Leicestershire police officer who patrolled the clock tower in the late 1800’s into the early 1900’s. He weighed 24 stone and was a famous figure in Leicester. People travelling to the city would know about Tubby and seek him out on duty, where he often had a crowd following him and around. 10,000 people attended his funeral – he was absolutely legendary and a real popular figure in the city of Leicester. The Tubby beer from our friends at Everards not only helps us tell the story of Tubby but it tastes great too! We are extremely happy to be supporting COPS once again through the beer and the new pin badges.”
So, raise a glass of Tubby and pop your pin badge on with pride this May for PC 83, John William “Tubby” Stephens and help raise money for the charity COPS!
