The Leicester Salon Styling It Out In The Face Of Adversity

Mewies & Co. in Mountsorrel, Leicester has been named one of the UK’s most beautiful salons after securing a finalist place in HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2020.

Despite a challenging year for the hair industry, Mewies & Co. has been recognised for its excellent interior design and is one of just eight UK hair businesses in the running to win the Salon Design award, sponsored by Takara Belmont UK, a category celebrating a redesigned or new salon that has been trading for less than six months by the end of June 2020.

The stunning scheme and layout at Mewies & Co. impressed a host of industry judges, as did the salon’s expertise at managing the budget throughout the whole design and build stages.

HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards, now in its 22nd year, promote professionalism, innovation and excellence, while recognising those individuals and teams who work tirelessly to raise the profile of the hairdressing industry and make it attractive to new entrants while keeping it at the forefront of the mind of the consumer.

Commenting on the announcement, Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards said; “To be named as a finalist in the Salon Design category confirms just how exceptional the team at Mewies & Co.  is. The process of good design and all the ensuing contracting and building takes an incredible amount of courage and thousands of decisions. The owners who produce these spectacular salons really take risks, and the effect it has on customers is amazing.

“It’s a huge investment to produce such a lovely environment, but the rewards outweigh the cost. This salon significantly stands out from the crowd because of its level of excellence. We wish the team the best of luck.”

On their success, salon owner Dan Mewies says: “We put our heart and soul into creating a beautiful salon environment for our customers. Yes, it was a big project, but the impressed faces walking through the door tell us it was 100% worth it. The new salon look also inspires and motivates our team. Who doesn’t love to work in a beautiful environment? We are thrilled to have reached the finals!”

Mewies & Co. will find out if they have achieved the top spot at an awards evening on Monday 25th January at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Takara Belmont sponsors the Salon Design Award category. Cari-Anne Rawlinson, Hairdressing Marketing Executive says: “Achieving a finalist place in these most prestigious awards is a phenomenal achievement. As a creative industry focussed on making people look and feel beautiful, salon design plays a critical role in the clients’ emotional experience and salon journey. A stunning salon design makes a clear statement about its values for beauty and excellence to ensure customer confidence, as well as creating a positive workplace environment. Getting the style, colours, textures and equipment choices right is essential to exceeding customer expectations, maximising the range of services and improving commercial performance too.”

Currently there are now more than 43,000 hair and beauty businesses in the UK, following a 45% increase over the past five years. It is reported that hair and beauty businesses also have higher survival rates after five years than many other sectors.* It’s easy to see why the appointment books of UK salons are now full for the next few months following the nationwide lockdown and it is clear that the value of a professional service is held in high regard.
