There’s nowhere better than a lively city centre pub to truly feel the cosmopolitan vibe of a city in the summer.
Whether it’s a traditional pub garden, a high-street pub or modern pub restaurant, Leicester has it all. The growing food and drinks scene is breathing new life into the city and it’s easy to be spoilt for choice! We’ve picked three of our favourite pubs to soak up the sun in the city!
King Richard III – Highcross Street
What a transformation for this city centre pub! Located in the heart of the city next to the Highcross shopping centre, this is a great place tounwind after a hard day’s shopping. Chris, Andy and Andrea have created a welcoming, modern and comfortable pub, which already has a great reputation for its amazing yet simple food and atmosphere. This comes as no surprise as they also own the hugely successful St Martins Coffee and Crafty Burger in St Martins Square. This beautifully restored Victorian building now serves locally sourced high quality food and drink. Combined with the addition of a lovely little courtyard, it’s perfect for summer days in the city.

The Old Horse – London Road
Not short on personality, this award-winning pub is a must for anyone looking for a great
selection of beer and cider on the bar. Looking out over Victoria Park and only a short walk into
the city centre, this pub is a key destination for many when planning a night out. Just walking in, you are met with the fun and playful eccentricity of Kev and Dee who run the pub, making sure all are welcome including dogs and children who are always kept entertained. There is a huge, hidden gem of a beer garden out back while inside the cider room – essential for a Cider Pub of the Year winner – is a delight to any cider drinker with a rotation of craft cider on draught every month! Grab yourself a drink and soak up the friendly atmosphere of this pub.

The Knight & Garter – Hotel Street
It’s clear that Sam Hagger has a passion for great pubs, great food and great service. Not content with running two award winning pubs, Sam has just finished renovating a third. The Knight & Garter is the latest addition to The Beautiful Pubs Collective and is handily placed next to the city’s brand new multimillion pound continental inspired piazza area near Leicester Market.
The Knight & Garter is more than just a pub, offering a restaurant, cellar bar and art gallery and is sure to raise the standard in the city. Serving unpasteurised beer from an imported beer kettle as well as local wines & spirits, the quality of drinks on offer is among the best around. Make sure you grab a seat on the stunning alfresco terrace overlooking the piazza, the perfect place to soak up the culture of the city in style!

Everards -Great pubs need great people
Pubs don’t survive without great people running them. From the owner to the bar staff, everyone involved makes your experience what it is. What makes a great pub owner is simple – passion. Passion for people, passion for food and drink and a passion to be successful. With that said there are still some vacant pubs around the city and county that are calling out for people with that passion to take them on and establish them as their own.
Maybe you can be the next Leicester CAMRA Pub of the Year winner?
