A new pub is opening its doors in Leicester to service the large and growing demand for high quality craft beers, real ale, wines and spirits. The Two-Tailed Lion Free House and bottle shop, named as a nod to the city’s vibrant history, is a contemporary take on a traditional pub and will be serving customers from 6pm on Friday 22nd June.
Set across two floors in a cosy Grade II-listed building on Millstone Lane, The Two-Tailed Lion is a traditional British pub with a timeless aesthetic that gives a subtle nod to modern, American-influenced tap houses. The name has been chosen to pay homage to the coat-of-arms of Simon De Montfort, Sixth Earl of Leicester. The main feature is the back-bar tap wall, showcasing six frequently changing keg beers. In addition to this there will be three cask lines and a bottle shop for on and off-sales.
The new pub will provide a friendly, comfortable environment within an historic building for a wide and varied audience to enjoy the very best drinks available. The Two-Tailed Lion has something for everyone, whatever your tipple.
The bar will feature beer from local breweries, including exclusive beers from Leicester’s own Framework Brewery, alongside quality beers from further afield such as Cloudwater Brew Co, Buxton Brewery, Verdant, and many others. A variety of spirits made by the distillation arms of the Wild Beer Co, Northern Monk and other craft breweries will sit atop the spirits shelf, alongside ten whiskys, a tailored selection of fine wines, and specialist cider from the likes of Tiny Rebel. The pub will also operate as a bottle shop, where a selection of the most exciting and sought-after beers from around the world will be offered both to drink-in and take-away.
The draft list will be published live to the popular beer networking app Untapp’d, an app which allows customers to check-in their beers and peruse the selection remotely. The pub will play host to monthly beer tastings and homebrew clubs, and will have regular unique events such as tap takeovers, food pairing evenings and ‘Meet the Brewer’ nights. The upstairs ‘tasting room’ will also be available free for private bookings.
A small and locally-sourced bar food menu will offer customers a range of mouth-watering, locally-sourced food flights which will cater for vegans, vegetarians and carnivores alike.
Matt Baker and Alice Hubbard, the team behind St Martin’s Square pop-up tap house The Tap in the Square, are excited to welcome customers to their new permanent pub in the historic Greyfriars area of the city. In a first for Leicester, The Two-Tailed Lion’s staff are 100% Certified Cicerones – achieving a recognised qualification which certifies and educates beer professionals in order to elevate the beer experience for customers… in short, they really know their beer.
Alice and Matt said:
“We want to help Leicester to respond to the changing trends in beer culture; particularly American-influenced craft beer. We’re incredibly passionate about beer but more than anything, The Two-Tailed Lion is about our values, which celebrate the traditions of British pub culture. We’re proud to have designed a beautiful space inside an historic building which encapsulates the timeless quality of the British boozer but which celebrates our contemporary culture.”
The team behind the venture have been fortunate to work with some incredible craftspeople from Leicester-based companies including M & G Joinery, Tanti Design, Vertigo Design, Dean at Signature Designs, and Bulb Studios in addition to incredible support from Leicester beer aficionado Jamie Stenson of CamRA’s Leicester branch.
