REVIEW: A London home away from home: The Other House

Kensington

As a frequent business visitor to London, I often find myself wanting to feel more at home. Recently, I decided to explore options where I could relax and unwind, seeking a place that offered all the creature comforts without feeling like just another hotel room. Enter The Other House in South Kensington, writes Donna Richardson.

The Other House Kensington is a lavish home-from-home

Arriving at the Other House Kensington residence, I was impressed by the beautiful blooms decorating the door and the ornate marble steps. From the moment I checked in, I knew this would be a special experience, but it was also homely and had all the creature comforts. I was given an apartment named 9 Potter—a nod to platform nine and three-quarters -which felt special since my daughter is a big fan of J.K. Rowling’s books.

As soon as I closed the door to my private apartment, I began to explore my surroundings. I was impressed with the comfy living room, kitchen, and bedroom. The rooms are spacious and well-equipped. After a busy day exploring London, I settled on the sofa, turned on the TV, got cosy underneath my tartan blanket, and started reading my book.

After a busy day with my heels pounding on the floor of the Excel Centre, I was looking forward to an early night. I showered using the branded amenities and fell asleep with the TV on as I climbed into my large bed, almost sinking into the covers. I had the best night’s sleep, woke up early, made myself a coffee, and then headed downstairs to The Other Kitchen, which was a vintage haven with its chequered floor, green tiles and plush red upholstered bar. I sat down to a hearty breakfast of eggs royale. I savoured every bite of the fresh salmon and perfectly runny yolks; it was divine.

I had meetings in town, but I returned in the afternoon and spent my day at leisure in the members’ lounge, tucked away in one of the small private meeting rooms. I nibbled on delicious snacks like halloumi bites and mini beef sliders, enough to satiate me before my scheduled meal at Michelin-starred restaurant Galvin La Chapelle in Shoreditch that night.

The Other House has successfully created a luxurious environment so that even while staying in the capital, you can cook, relax, and enjoy your own private space, just like you would at home. Guests can retreat to their apartments, which feature cosy living areas, fully equipped kitchenettes, and comfortable bedrooms, or hang out downstairs and meet people. Lounging in the communal space feels akin to being in a grand stately home, with lots of obscure art around, concealing the faces, creating a sense of what happens here stays here.

The public areas radiate elegance, featuring beautiful artwork that inspires creativity and conversation. A diverse mix of people can be seen engaging in meetings and socialising, creating an atmosphere that is both dynamic and inviting. For those moments when you seek solitude, charming curtained alcoves provide a private refuge.

I was in town for a travel conference and decided to extend my stay by a few more nights and see a few friends and clients. For instance, I had received an invitation to dinner at the home of the esteemed contemporary artist Philip Colbert, at Maison Colbert, hosted by the luxury cognac brand Martell. Additionally, I wanted to take some time to relax and take in the sights, too.

Community space

Back at the Other House, I loved that it fosters a great sense of community, so you don’t feel alone in the capital. When not working, indulge in the wellness retreat, private dining rooms, and stylish member lounges. The private club has social spaces where you can meet others over drinks at The Owl & Monkey or attend exclusive events.

Before my dinner at Philip Colbert’s with Martell, where I was about to engage in a world of pop art and surrealism, I enjoyed a delicious cocktail by the piano and didn’t feel self-conscious despite being in a long formal cocktail dress. You can dress in a ball gown or jeans; no one is judging.

During my stay, I had a series of appointments in my diary, one being a dinner with Martell at the residence of Philip Colbert
