WE LOVE A’DAM.

DLUXE recently returned to Amsterdam after a 15-year hiatus.  It’s clear the city is not the one we left behind. While the unmistakable liberal energy still pulses through its streets, canals, and quirky neighbourhoods, a wave of gentrification has slowly, but surely, begun to redefine the Dutch capital. Yet, that doesn’t mean it’s lost any of its charm—in fact, it’s evolved into an even more compelling destination for weekenders looking for fun, history, and a slice of modern culture.

The Changing Face of the Red Light District

Amsterdam has long been famous for its Red Light District—those iconic windows where the world’s oldest profession is on full display. However, in recent years, the city has taken steps to clean up this area, including a very real campaign to close down these famous windows. The question now arises: should they be preserved as part of Amsterdam’s storied history, or should they be shut down in favour of a more sanitized image? There’s a compelling argument on both sides. For many, the Red Light District is a critical piece of the city’s past, and its presence is a reminder of Amsterdam’s progressive roots. Others argue that its current form no longer fits the modern vision of the city. One thing is clear—this debate is part of a larger transformation that’s unfolding across Amsterdam, from the cobbled streets to the now-pristine canals.

Riverboats: From Old School to Over-the-Top

For decades, Amsterdam’s canal system has been the beating heart of the city’s charm. The classic riverboats, once humble, have now expanded into a dazzling range of options. The old-school boat tours have been supersized and now include “cookie cruises,” and there’s no shortage of private hire champagne boat options for those looking to float through the canals in style. It’s a celebration of excess that somehow still manages to feel authentically Amsterdam—a city where innovation never forgets its roots.

The Drug Culture: A Whiff of Change

Anyone who remembers Amsterdam’s reputation for its freewheeling approach to drugs will find that the city has undergone a noticeable transformation. The smell of weed—once pervasive in the air—is still there, but far less overpowering than in years past. In fact, it seems you’re more likely to catch a whiff of weed in any UK city as you are in Amsterdam these days. The city has followed a path reminiscent of New York’s “clean-up” of the 90s, and it’s evident in the air. While cannabis use remains part of Amsterdam’s cultural fabric, the gritty edges are being softened, giving the city a cleaner, more polished feel.

Transport: Getting Around Amsterdam is a Breeze

One of the most impressive elements of Amsterdam’s transformation is its transport system. The city has always been bike-friendly, but now the tram network is more reliable, cleaner, and easier to navigate than ever. These electric trams crossing through the city are an excellent way to see the city, especially when the sun is shining. The best part? You’re not confined to underground systems—riding the trams lets you soak in the beautiful streets, pass by curious little cafes, and peek at the canal houses that make Amsterdam so unique. Alternatively, if you’re counting your steps, hit the streets as it’s super easy to navigate a pied.

Celebrating 750 Years of Amsterdam

In June 2025, Amsterdam celebrated its 750th anniversary with a road-blocking, city-wide party that saw tens of thousands of revellers flooding the streets. The celebrations included a series of concerts, cultural events, and historical exhibitions that gave both tourists and locals a chance to celebrate the city’s rich past while looking to the future. It was a spectacle that demonstrated Amsterdam’s enduring spirit and sense of community, a celebration that reminded everyone why it’s still one of the most fun, lively and liberal places to be in Europe.

Top Things to Do This Summer in Amsterdam

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning after years away, Amsterdam is brimming with activities that combine the old and new. Here are a few highlights:

  • Wasteland Summer Fest (July 5): A Saturday full of extraordinary live entertainment, art spaces and spectacular shows by international performers. Circus performances, fire shows, dancers, contortionists and much more, featuring renowned DJs playing multiple genres of music on different stages, created in collaboration with the infamous KitKat club (Berlin) and Rapido (Amsterdam).
  • Pride Amsterdam 2025 (July 26 – August 3): A nine-day celebration with over 300 activities, including:
    • Canal Parade (August 2): The iconic 80-strong boat parade through the canals.
    • Pride Park (July 26): A community celebration in Vondelpark with performances.
    • Pride at Reguliers (August 1): A lively street party in a popular LGBTQ+ district, now with the new Dutch Street Party, too.
  • Rijksmuseum: No trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to this cultural treasure trove. With its impressive collection of art by the Old Masters and stunning architecture, it’s a must-see.  If your taste is a little more modern, check out Moco Museum which features iconic works from the likes of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Studio Irma and Banksy.  Alternatively, look up STRAAT, which is a museum dedicated to street art and graffiti.
  • Vondelpark: If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, head to Amsterdam’s iconic park for a relaxed afternoon. Rent a bike, have a picnic, or just enjoy the green space.
  • Canal Cruise: While the cookie cruises are the new luxury option, there’s something timeless about a classic canal boat tour. Opt for a smaller, intimate boat for the most picturesque views.  Top Tip: grab an ‘I Amsterdam’ city card and you get an hour’s canal cruise for free (as well as heaps of other free entries and discounts across the city’s attractions and, of course, free public transport).
  • Foodie Paradise: From trendy cafes and bakeries like the Saint-Jean Café and Bakery to classic Dutch eateries, Amsterdam’s food scene is thriving. Be sure to check out local favourites like Bitterballen, Supper Club, ZaZa’s, Calisto and Café de Klepel, or indulge in a Michelin-starred meal at one of the city’s innovative restaurants.  Alternatively, there are guided (and self-guided) food tours across the city.
  • Anne Frank House: No matter how many times you’ve been to Amsterdam, this moving historical site is always worth revisiting. It’s a sobering and powerful experience that reflects the city’s resilience.
  • A’Dam Lookout: Head over to the A’dam Lookout for the best panoramic view of the city.  From its bustling city centre to the far outskirts, this is a birds’ eye view especially when you ‘ride the swing’ hanging over the edge of the building!
