Hamilton: An American Musical, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, has become a cultural phenomenon since its debut. Blending hip-hop, R&B, and traditional Broadway styles, Hamilton has redefined the landscape of musical theatre.

The musical’s success is unprecedented, garnering critical acclaim and numerous awards, including 11 Tony Awards. This much anticipated touring production, playing at Birmingham’s Hippodrome until 31st August brings Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical to life with a dazzling combination of exceptional performances and dynamic choreography. Chronicling the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The story begins with Hamilton’s early life as an orphan in the Caribbean and his arrival in New York City in 1776, where he impresses local leaders with his intelligence and ambition.

Hamilton quickly becomes a key figure in the American Revolution, and his visionary financial policies lay the foundation for the American economy. However, Hamilton’s personal life is fraught with challenges and tribulations – apparently Martha Washington named her tomcat after him so you can guess the rest.

Through its innovative blend of hip-hop, R&B, and traditional musical theatre, Hamilton portrays the complexities of ambition, legacy, and the relentless pursuit of one’s ideals. The musical’s diverse cast and contemporary music breathe new life into the historical narrative, making the story of Alexander Hamilton resonate with modern audiences.

Shaq Taylor shines in the titular role of Alexander Hamilton. His portrayal is both powerful and nuanced, showcasing Hamilton’s relentless drive and complex emotional landscape with extraordinary depth. Maya Britto as Eliza Hamilton, delivers a moving and heartfelt performance. Her rendition of “Burn” is a standout moment, highlighting her incredible vocal range and emotional intensity. The word ‘you’ has never been delivered with such venom.

Daniel Boys Monarch is another stand out, as is the whole cast’s comic timing and focus, much more evident in this production than I noted when seeing the show in London’s West End. The diction and pronunciation seems better too – this may be a benefit of the Hippodrome’s acoustics but I found I was able to follow so much more of the fast paced, whip smart dialogue here in the second city than I’d been able in the capital.

cohesive and electrifying performance. The choreography, by Andy Blankenbuehler, is as intricate and engaging as ever, seamlessly blending hip-hop, jazz, and traditional Broadway styles and special mention should be made of the rotating stage; a simple tool used to mind blowing effect in the song Satisfied.

Hamilton at the Birmingham Hippodrome is an extraordinary theatrical experience that combines stellar performances, breathtaking choreography, and a compelling story. It’s a genuine must-see production that not only lives up to the hype but exceeds it. See it while you can.
